Not many posts from me regarding my current project, Elopak (third largest carton producer in the world), and this is mostly because is has been an extremely frustrating process. The course is called Systems oriented design, and as the title implies, we are working with systems (really!), getting a holistic view of the company and the field they are working within. Not knowing what the result will be, and not knowing what you are looking for (as I got no brief), made the first months my worst, of all 4,5 years at AHO.

Now I'm finally getting more into things, about time as there is less than three weeks left. This is a part of my mapping, which is a big part of the course to get this "larger view" of the situation.

Don't think Ida knew what she got herself into when she asked Thomas and me for some input, before she was heading to Paris to present for her company, Abbott. we spent quite a few hours on this low tech presentation, but it was fun and I think the result was something quite different from the rest of the speakers.

We got 5 nominations, three for Deichmanske and two for Telenor. I have been nominated before, but never won, so the joy was even greater when we won this year! Thank you Creuna for 10.000 NOK! The Telenor project won the prize "Innovation Prize For User Centered Design and Technology", so we are hoping Telenor sees the value in it as well.

As the other master courses, we to had an exhibition. This turned out to be a lot(!) more work then we had expected, but the result was really nice. We tried to create a corner in the exhibition, to show how we wanted our solution could work. So we got furniture from Fretex, and comics from Serieteket, to create a small space in the future Serieteket. PeiPei and me was doing the project together, and Renata was helping us to make the exhibition. This is us gathering furniture, and painting them. 12 hours of work, during the most beautiful day so far this year.

Because we worked with a physical space, we made a model of this space, a little bit for fun, but mostly practical. Made two versions, and one with the colours are the final one, and we used it during our presentations to explain how the colour system and furniture could work.

We surprisingly survived this semester as well, and we are happy with the results and the feedback we got from both Telenor and Deichmanske. As we signed a contract with Telenor, I can't post the result yet, but I will show what we made for Deichmanske libary at Grünerløkka. To explain it:

Serieteket is the comic section of the Deichmanske library at Grünerløkka, one of a kind in Norway.

Our project focuses on the space, and how people use it. First detecting problems concerning the furniture and way finding, we came up with three directions to improve the utilization of the space. We introduced a color system to more easily find what you are looking for, second hand furniture redesigned in cooperation with the salvation army (Fretex), to create an interesting look on a low budget, and to make the comics more visible. Our main delivery is something as simple as a bookmark, to bring life to the shelves, and to create communication between readers. One can find (and leave) recommendations and comments, and one can give a personal touch to the shelves.

The embarrassing truth

We got the task of tracking ourself for four days at uni, and I decided to track my eating habits. I know I'm an unhealthy eater, and I though it would be fun to see what I actually ate during the week. Can't say that I'm proud of the result, but it interesting to see. Just have to add that these were Monday-Thursday, I eat quite a lot more during the weekend! This week we are supposed to create a service according to findings, and I will post the results. What service would make me eat more healthy?

Fraser Island

Spent three days on Fraser Island, and even the rain could not ruin the trip. The island was absolutely amazing (at least at the times that I was not terrified that we would drive the car into the ocean), and one of my favorite things was walking in the sand dunes. It was fascinating to see how the sand had killed all the plant life, and left these remains.

Heading Home

All my classes are finished, and I'm quite confident that I passed them all. (I hope, I hope). The long way home started with a two weeks exploration of Queensland, and at the moment I am enjoying some 30 degrees in Cambodia. All though I'm ready to get home, I think it will be amazing here, already the first day I'm in love with the place, and hope that it will continue that path when explorations continue tomorrow. This lovely bird showed of his (?) feathers in the Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane.

Eight wonderful, but exhausting days in New Zealand. A lot of rain, and a lot of wind, but managed to see much of the north island. Eight days is nowhere near enough time, but still a bit better then none. Hopefully I'll go back one day, although can't really say the thought of the flight is to tempting.

32 hours traveling, 14 of them spent in between 5 kids, screaming and kicking. What a blast! Arrived to Australia to find out that the hostel did not have the reservation. Got shipped to another hostel, with a very nice view into the neighbors wall. Now, a week later, I´m starting to feel my toes and fingers again, yes Australia is freezing. Friday is the big moving day, 20 m from Coogee Beach...life is good once again :)

After the presentation on friday, the conclusion is to work on this concept. They liked the style, but thought it would not feel safe enough for new parents. So now I´m going to start sketching new ideas on this concept, making it feel more safe, and making a stand for it, so you can take it with you in your home, so it don´t have to be just in one place.

This is the third concept, and the one I like the most. The idea is very simple, and starts with something as simple as a blanket. It can be used as a "play blanket" for the floor, hanged as a cradle and with a zipper it can be it´s own packaging. As the other two concepts it will become a swing, perhaps by using the same piece of textile, or by adding a now one. Think I will make a separate one to keep the first one clean.

You start with the crib, then this swing, when the child can hold it self up, you can use the swing underneath. both the crib and the first swing can be used for storage when the child has outgrown them.
